Niels Christian, Anton & Morten
Morud 1929
Morten Meilgaard says:
Some family history. He was Niels Christian Jacobsen as a bricklayer in
Jutland, working at the "castle" Meilgaard.
The owners were not called Meilgaard, they were Juel or Juel Brockdorff. When
Niels Christian emigrated to Copenhagen, he found that several bricklayers there
were named Jacobsen, so he went by the name of "Meilgaard" Jacobsen.
He applied for and received permission by "Kongebrev" for him and his
descendants to change the family name to Meilgaard. Remember, Jorgen found that
document, signed by King
Christian the Ninth. Henceforth he called himself Niels Christian Meilgaard
Jacobsen, and his oldest son became Anton Christian Jacobsen Meilgaard, with the
surnames in reverse order. When I was born, they discarded Jacobsen altogether,
and I was christened Morten Christian Meilgaard.
